Did you know?

  • One in three 16-18 year-old girls have experienced unwanted sexual touching at school in the UK (EVAW YouGov Poll 2010)
  • 28% of young people report they had seen sexual pictures on mobile phones at school a few times a month or more (EVAW YouGov Poll 2010)
  • 1 in 2 boys & 1 in 3 girls think it is ok sometimes to hit a woman or force her to have sex (Zero Tolerance, 1998)
  • 77% of young people do not feel they have enough information and support to deal with physical or sexual violence (EVAW ICM Poll 2006)
  • Almost half (43%) of teenage girls believe that it is acceptable for a boyfriend to be aggressive towards his partner (NSPCC, 2005).
  • Out of 1353 young people aged between 13 and 17 surveyed by the NSPCC in 2009, a third of girls who were in relationships had experienced unwanted sexual acts, and one in 16 had been raped.
  • The End Violence Against Women coalition are campaigning for schools nationwide to address violence against women and girls throughout the curriculum and school polices including citizenship classes, sex education and bullying polices. Educational settings are an important site of prevention where attitudes that condone VAWG and gender stereotypes can be challenged and positive attitudes towards gender equality and equal relationships can be fostered. This in turn can lead to long term benefits in tackling violence against women as girls grow up to be better informed individuals, aware of their rights and the support systems available to them.
